Laila grew up in the countryside, of rural Quebec, where her love for organic agriculture and sustainable living first took root. Surrounded by nature, she developed a deep appreciation for the rhythms of the seasons, the value of homegrown food, and the importance of mindful living. This early connection to the land inspired her to explore holistic nutrition, herbal medicine, and community-based farming practices.
Her journey with WWOOF Canada began four years ago when she first signed up as a WWOOFer. It was during this time that she first had her eyes opened to where our food comes from. Laila spent a total of 18 months WWOOFing on organic farms all across the country, including those in Ontario, BC and Nova Scotia. This experience not only deepened her practical knowledge of growing food, foraging medicinal plants, and tending to sustainable homesteads – it shaped who she is today.
Beyond farming, Laila has worked in farm-to-table kitchens, where she connected the ingredients she harvested directly to the meals she prepared. Cooking with fresh, organic produce further fuelled her interest in the relationship between food and health. This hands-on experience solidified her desire to study the impact of nutrition on overall wellness, leading her to pursue a Holistic Nutrition Diploma. She now combines her love for sustainable food systems with her commitment to supporting health and mindful eating.
Looking ahead, Laila dreams of having her own homestead, an inclusive, vibrant space where she can grow food, raise animals, and build a community rooted in sustainability. She hopes to one day welcome WWOOFers to her own farm, passing on the knowledge and inspiration she gained through her own WWOOFing journey.
As a Board Member of WWOOF Canada, Laila brings a diverse background and a heartfelt dedication to fostering supportive networks of hosts and volunteers. She is excited to contribute to projects that strengthen WWOOF Canada’s mission, empowering people to reconnect with the land, share knowledge, and cultivate a more sustainable future for all.
