A Little WWOOF History
WWOOF has been connecting people with organic farms for over 50 years. Over that time, individual national WWOOF organizations have developed their own structures, cultures, and approaches. Yet the movement has always held the same shared vision: creating opportunities for hands-on ecological learning, cultural exchange, and hands-on experience in sustainable farming.
Since the very first international gathering in the UK in 2000 – and later in San Francisco in 2012 – WWOOF groups have committed to meeting regularly to work more closely together. These gatherings help align the network, strengthen collaboration, and protect the core values of WWOOF. Out of this effort, the Federation of WWOOF Organisations (FoWO) was created to unite more than 30 national groups to promote and protect WWOOF worldwide.

Coming together in Drôme, France
Earlier this month, WWOOF representatives came together once again, this time in France at a WWOOF France host farm, Les Amanins. More than 70 participants from 21 countries gathered in this vibrant setting where organic farming, cultural exchange, and community-building are practiced daily.
At this meeting, participants worked collaboratively on key projects, including the upcoming launch of the WWOOF App, the development of an international membership, and strategies for continuing to support national WWOOF groups around the world, including newer groups such as WWOOF Brasil and WWOOF Tanzania.

WWOOF is unique in that we have local staff and volunteers who are actively engaged with their hosts and WWOOFers at the community level. By coming together in person, we create space to exchange updates, share lessons learned, and strengthen the network as a whole.
Beyond the formal sessions, the gathering offered plenty of time for inspiration and connection: storytelling, workshops, hikes, a little wine tasting 🍷🌿, and even a joyful apple harvest 🍎 on the host farm.
The meeting reaffirmed that the WWOOF community is stronger than ever. Together, we’re shaping the future of WWOOF, and it looks so bright!
